Alfred Litherland was born in Quarndon in 1896, the son of Aldred and Mary E. Litherland and the brother of Timothy. (See Timothy Litherland.) In 1901 they were living in Quarndon Village. By 1911 he was employed as a “Milk Lad” by Mr Charles Bryer at Park Farm, Markeaton.
He joined the army on the 27th May 1916 giving his home address as Woodside Cottage, Kedleston Road. He was described as 5ft 5ins tall and his occupation as “Farm Worker”.
He seems to have been very close to the action as can be determined by the number of wounds he received:-
29th September 1917 Bullet wound left arm.
29th September 1917 Bullet wound right arm.
3rd October 1917 Bayonet wound left arm
13th October 1917 Gun-shot wound right arm.
On Christmas Day 1917 he joined the Tank Corps although that did not stop him getting injured:-
8th August 1918 Gassed
10th August 1918 Gassed.
He was discharged from the army on the 12th February 1919.
He married Mabel Clarke in 1922 and died possibly in 1975.
